Growing your own vegetables is one of the most rewarding things you can do in the garden. There’s nothing quite like stepping outside and harvesting fresh, flavourful produce that you’ve grown yourself.

How to Grow Artichokes

  • Artichokes love sunshine and rich soil.  Plant them in a well-prepared bed with plenty of compost for healthy growth.

  • Harvest the buds while they are still tight and firm; if left too long they will open into beautiful purple flowers.

  • Asparagus is a long-term crop.  Prepare the soil well with plenty of compost before planting, as plants can produce for 10–15 years.
  • Be patient; avoid harvesting spears in the first season so plants can establish strong roots.

  • Harvest the main head while it is still tight and compact, and side shoots will continue to produce for weeks afterwards.

  • Harvest once the skin has hardened and turned a deep beige colour, & allow fruits to cure in the sun to improve storage.

How to Grow Cabbage

  • Cabbage grows best in full sun and rich, well-drained soil.  Space plants well so heads have room to develop fully.

  • Harvest heads when they feel firm and solid, cutting them at the base before they split or become over-mature.

  • Cauliflower grows best in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil.  Keep plants consistently watered for smooth, well-formed heads.

  • When the head begins to form, tie the outer leaves loosely over it to protect the curd and keep it creamy white.

  • Harvest once the swollen root is about the size of a tennis ball, trimming off the outer roots before storing or using.
