Why are the leaves of my Monstera not splitting?

Young Monstera leaves are often solid. As the plant matures and receives enough bright indirect light, the leaves will begin to develop their characteristic splits and holes.

Why are the leaves of my Monstera turning yellow?

Yellow leaves are most commonly caused by overwatering. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly before watering again and ensure the pot drains well.

Does Monstera need support to grow?

Yes. In nature Monsteras climb trees, so providing a moss pole or stake can help the plant grow upright and produce larger leaves.

Monstera deliciosa Growing & Care Guide

Light

Monstera deliciosa thrives in bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light conditions. Avoid direct sunlight, as it may scorch the leaves. If the plant is placed in low light, growth may slow down, and fenestration might be reduced. Providing a balance of light levels promotes optimal growth.

WATER

Maintain a consistent watering routine for Monstera deliciosa. Water the plant when the top couple of centimetres of the soil feels dry. Ensure proper drainage and avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot. (Root rot is when the plant stays wet for too long and the roots begin to rot). During the growing season (spring and summer) the plant may require more frequent watering.

SOIL

Use a well-draining potting mix with a good balance of organic matter. They thrive in moist, humus-rich but well-drained soil. A mix of peat, perlite and orchid bark works well. Monstera deliciosa prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil. 

FERTILISER

Feed Monstera deliciosa with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2-4 weeks during the growing season. Dilute the fertiliser to half the recommended strength. Reduce or eliminate fertilisation in the autumn and winter when the plant’s growth slows down.

REPOTTING

Repotting may be necessary every 1-2 years or when the plant outgrows its current container.

COMMON ISSUES

  • Overwatering: Ensure the soil has proper drainage to prevent waterlogged conditions and root rot.
  • Leaf Fenestration: Adequate light is crucial for the development of the characteristic holes in the leaves. If fenestration is lacking, consider providing more indirect light.
