Why are my Aglaonema ‘Silver Queen’ leaves turning yellow?

This is usually caused by overwatering. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly before watering again.

Why are the leaves losing their silver colour?

Aglaonemas kept in very low light may lose some of their variegation. Move the plant to brighter indirect light to maintain its striking silver foliage.

Can Aglaonema ‘Silver Queen’ tolerate low light?

Yes. Aglaonemas are well known for tolerating low light, making them ideal for offices and indoor spaces with limited natural light.

Where to Aglaonemas grow best indoors?

Office desks, living room side tables, bedrooms with soft natural light, hallway tables, reception areas and workspaces, sheltered shady patio areas.

Light

Aglaonema ‘Silver Queen’ thrives in low to moderate light conditions, making it an excellent choice for indoor spaces with filtered or indirect sunlight. While it can tolerate lower light levels, providing bright, indirect light enhances the vibrancy of its foliage. Avoid direct sunlight, as it may scorch the leaves.

WATER

Maintain consistent soil moisture for ‘Silver Queen.’ Water the plant when the top couple of centimetres of the soil feels dry to the touch. Allow excess water to drain away, and avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.  (Root rot is when the plant stays wet for too long and the roots begin to rot). 

SOIL

Use a well-draining potting mix for Aglaonema ‘Silver Queen.’ A mix of peat, perlite and pine bark works well. Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent water-logging. ‘Silver Queen’ prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil.

FERTILISER

Feed Aglaonema ‘Silver Queen’ with a balanced liquid fertiliser during the growing season (spring and summer). Apply the fertiliser at half the recommended strength every 4-6 weeks. Reduce or stop fertilising in the autumn and winter when the plant is in a dormant phase.

REPOTTING

Repot the plant every 1-2 years or when it outgrows its current container.

COMMON ISSUES

  • Overwatering: Be cautious not to let the soil stay overly wet, as ‘Silver Queen’ is susceptible to root rot.
  • Pests: Keep an eye out for common indoor pests such as spider mites or mealybugs. Treat promptly with neem oil if infestations occur.

SPECIAL NOTES

Aglaonema ‘Silver Queen’ is known for its air-purifying properties, making it a valuable addition to indoor spaces. Regularly wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to keep them clean and free of dust.
