Areca Palm Growing & Care Guide

FAQ

Why are the tips of my Areca Palm turning brown?

Brown tips are often caused by dry air, inconsistent watering, or mineral build-up from tap water. Increasing humidity and watering consistently can help.

Why are the leaves of my Areca Palm turning yellow?

Yellowing leaves may be caused by overwatering or poor drainage. Make sure the pot drains well and avoid letting the plant sit in water.

Can Areca Palms tolerate low light?

Areca palms prefer bright, indirect light but can tolerate moderate light conditions. Very low light may slow their growth.

Where do Areca Palms Work Best Indoors?

Living room corners, bright office spaces, sunrooms or enclosed patios, large entryways, bedrooms with bright filtered light, dining rooms with natural light.

Light

Areca Palms thrive in bright, indirect light. They can tolerate lower light conditions, but prefer being in a well-lit space. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves. Place the palm near a bright window for optimal growth.

WATER

Maintain moderately moist soil for Areca Palms. Water the plant when the top few centimetres of the soil feels slightly dry. Use room-temperature water and ensure good drainage. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot.  (Root rot is when the plant stays wet for too long and the roots begin to rot). Mist the fronds occasionally to provide a slightly more humid environment.

SOIL

Use a well-draining potting mix with added organic matter. A mix of peat, perlite, and pine bark is suitable. Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.

FERTILISER

Feed Areca Palms with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half the recommended strength. Apply the fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or eliminate feeding in the autumn and winter. Generally, palms have lower nutrient requirements compared to other plants, so be careful not to over-fertilise.

REPOTTING

Consider repotting every 2-3 years when the roots fill the pot.

COMMON ISSUES

  • Spider Mites: Keep an eye out for spider mites, especially in dry conditions. Treat with Neem Oil. Regularly misting the fronds can help prevent infestations.
  • Yellowing Leaves: Yellowing leaves may indicate overwatering. Ensure proper drainage and adjust the watering frequency.

SPECIAL NOTES

Areca Palms are effective air purifiers, removing toxins from indoor spaces. Prune brown or yellowing fronds regularly to maintain the plant’s appearance. The Areca Palm is known for its versatility and adaptability to different indoor conditions.
