The herb basil (Ocimum basilicum) is amongst the most popular at the moment. Plants flourish in the heat and humidity of summer and an abundance of fresh, aromatic foliage is always available for adding to culinary delights. Sweet basil is grown from seed and is essentially an annual. As such, pick off flower buds to encourage further new growth. If left to set seed, the plants often die off and need constant replenishment.
A new range of cutting grown basil plants is available at present. The Herbalea Range offers carefully selected basils that have a longer lifespan and a strong flavour. They make compact little plants that are just as much a part of the flower garden as the herb and veggie patch. Some have purple or red dark foliage to add to their allure.
